my favourite quote

I was recently asked to for my favourite quote and it took me a while to remember this one. Recording it here for quick reference!

“One must never miss an opportunity of quoting things by others which are always more interesting than those one thinks up oneself.”

— Proust

bill bryson on consumption

“The whole of the global economy is based on supplying the cravings of two percent of the whole population. If Americans suddenly stopped indulging, or ran out of closet space, the world would fall apart. If you ask me, that’s crazy.”

~ Bill Bryson – The Lost Continent (1990)

Even though this was written 18 years before the Global Financial Crisis, it’s rather poignant if you ask me.

valentine’s day

Couples are exchanging gifts and presents to show their love for each other. If only people could do more of this throughout the year, we may not have 900 divorces a week in Queensland. As a marriage and relationship counselor, I see so many who take their relationship for granted.

fritz scholder

We saw a Fritz Scholder exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City this morning.

Fritz Scholder

A couple of his quotes were quite neat:

“You must walk that tightrope between accident and discipline. Accident by itself…so what? Discipline by itself is boring. By walking that tightrope and putting down something on a canvas…coming from your guts, you have a chance of making marks that … will live longer than you.”

“I give thanks every day that I’ve been able to take my craziness and make it work for me.”

scar tissue quote

“After all those years of all kinds of abuse and crashing into trees at eighty miles an hour and jumping off buildings and living through overdoses and liver disease, I feel better now than I did ten years ago. I might have some scar tissue, but that’s all right, I’m still making progress. And when I do think, “Man, a fucking motel room with a couple of thousand dollars’ worth of narcotics would do me right,” I just look over at my dog and remember that Buster’s never seen me high.”

Anthony Kiedis – Scar Tissue (2004)

on writing

“He comments on how amazing it is that everything in the universe can be described by the twenty-six written characters with which they have been working.”

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Innately, I am a worrier. Whenever I start to worry I try to recall the following quotes.

The first is about the two rules of life:

Rule Number One: Don’t sweat the small stuff
Rule Number Two: It’s all small stuff

The second is a quote I heard in a film at the National Museum in Canberra in 2004:

“As long as I’m breathing, I’m having a good day”

The third is a part of an Underworld song, Born Slippy .Nuxx:

“Let your feelings slip boy, but never your mask, boy.”
